UK Tourists Warned: Storms to Batter Spain’s Coast and Islands With Dangerous Force

UK tourists in Spain have been alerted to severe weather conditions that pose a ‘significant risk to people,’ with storms expected to hit popular holiday destinations like Alicante, Ibiza, and Majorca. Spain’s national weather agency, Aemet, has issued a special advisory for the eastern mainland and the Balearic Islands, effective today until Thursday, August 15.

Amber weather warnings are in place for heavy rain, strong winds, and even hail along Spain’s east coast, affecting areas such as Alicante, Almeria, Valencia, Girona, Barcelona, and Tarragona. The Balearic Islands, including Ibiza, Majorca, and Menorca, are also under amber warnings, with hail larger than 2cm and wind gusts up to 100km/h expected. Additionally, warnings for strong coastal winds and large waves have been issued for these islands.

These storms are expected to present a “significant risk to people and property” due to the anticipated “very strong winds” in some regions. Aemet’s advisory stated that a DANA (Isolated Depression at High Levels) will cause increasing atmospheric instability across much of the eastern peninsula and the Balearic Islands.

The amber warnings will remain in effect until midnight today (Wednesday), with most warnings lifted by Thursday, except for the Balearic Islands, as the weather system moves eastward. By Friday, the storms are predicted to shift towards the central Mediterranean, but Aemet warns that “showers and storms of some intensity” may still occur in parts of the Balearic Islands and northeastern Spain during the first half of the day.
